Buena Vista was founded in 1857 by Agoston Haraszthy, a Hungarian immigrant widely credited as the father of California wine. It is the oldest commercial winery in California, and its caves — hand-dug by Chinese laborers into the Mayacamas hillside — remain one of the most historically significant wine sites in the state. After decades of changing ownership, the estate was purchased in 2011 by Jean-Charles Boisset, who has restored both the historic property and the quality of the wines. The Chardonnay and Pinot Noir remain the benchmarks, made from estate vineyards in the cool southern end of Sonoma Valley.
