Carlo and Dante Mondavi, fourth-generation winegrowers and grandsons of Robert Mondavi, left the Napa Cabernet legacy in 2013 to make cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from three extreme coastal sites. The acronym — Research in Agriculture and Enology Naturally — hints at the philosophy: organic, regenerative, native yeast, unfined, unfiltered.

Founded by brothers Carlo and Dante Mondavi in 2013, RAEN (pronounced "rain") is one of the defining voices of the new generation of West Sonoma Coast winemakers. Farming the Bodega Vineyard in Occidental — planted in 2000, spaced at the tight Burgundian 4x4 meter density and farmed by hand — RAEN produces Pinot Noir and Chardonnay of haunting delicacy and precision. The wines are made with whole-cluster fermentation, native yeast, and very low sulfur additions. In less than a decade, RAEN has become one of California's most sought-after small producers. Allocation by mailing list.

Royal St. Robert Cuvée Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast — The flagship, named in honor of the brothers' grandfather Robert Mondavi; sourced largely from the Bodega Vineyard and made in a brisk, lithe, marine-influenced style that reached Wine Spectator's Top 10.

Bodega Vineyard Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast — A single-vineyard bottling from a site near Bodega Bay, vibrant and savory with coastal minerality.

Home Field Vineyard Pinot Noir, Fort Ross-Seaview — An estate, high-elevation coastal Pinot of energy and depth.

Charles Ranch Chardonnay, Fort Ross-Seaview — From old, pre-phylloxera hillside plantings near the Pacific, dense and finely focused.

Founded in 2013 by fourth-generation winegrowers Carlo and Dante Mondavi, RAEN ('Research in Agriculture and Enology Naturally') is a Sonoma Coast house devoted exclusively to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, made with whole-cluster, native-yeast, minimal-intervention winemaking and released by mailing list.

RAEN (pronounced "rain" — an acronym for Research in Agriculture and Enology Naturally) was founded in 2013 by Carlo and Dante Mondavi, fourth-generation winegrowers and grandsons of Robert Mondavi. The brothers stepped away from the family's Napa Cabernet legacy to build a domaine focused entirely on cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from three distinct vineyards: Home Field in Fort Ross-Seaview overlooking the Pacific, the home estate in Freestone-Occidental (a certified organic wildlife rescue site), and Bodega Vineyard near Bodega Bay — one of the oldest meter-by-meter Pinot plantings on the Sonoma Coast. Farming is organic, regenerative, and permaculture-informed. Winemaking emphasizes whole-cluster fermentation, native yeast, neutral French oak, and bottling without fining or filtration. There is no public tasting room — visits and allocations are managed entirely through direct email inquiry and the RAEN mailing list.

RAEN — 'Research in Agriculture and Enology Naturally' — was founded in 2013 by brothers Carlo and Dante Mondavi, fourth-generation members of the Mondavi family who set out to make world-class Pinot Noir on the wild western hills of the Sonoma Coast. Carlo leads the winemaking and Dante the farming, working with winemaker Melanie McIntyre to craft tiny-production, single-vineyard Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from cool, high-elevation Fort Ross-Seaview sites within a few miles of the Pacific. Beyond-organic farming, native-yeast fermentation, whole-cluster Pinot, and minimal intervention define the wines, which are unfined, unfiltered, and offered chiefly through the RAEN mailing list.

Winemaker

Melanie McIntyre is RAEN's winemaker, working alongside Carlo and Dante Mondavi to turn three extreme West Sonoma Coast sites into some of America's most acclaimed Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Her approach is uncompromisingly minimalist — whole-cluster fermentation on native yeasts, unfined, delicately pressed — letting the coastal vineyards speak. The results have been historic: her 2023s earned two perfect 100-point scores from James Suckling, and the 2023 Royal St. Robert Cuvée was named the No. 1 American wine in his Top 100 Wines of the USA 2025. She called 2023 the finest vintage since the winery's 2013 founding — a long, cool, patient season that let her pick Pinot in October, something RAEN had never done.
