Sonoma Coast

The Sonoma Coast AVA is best understood as an umbrella designation — a large, climate-defined appellation stretching from San Pablo Bay in the south to the Mendocino border in the north, encompassing a remarkable diversity of sub-regions united by proximity to the Pacific Ocean and the cooling influence it delivers. Within its boundaries sit some of California's most celebrated wine addresses: Fort Ross-Seaview, the West Sonoma Coast, the Petaluma Gap, and the upper Russian River corridor.

The appellation's character shifts dramatically from south to north and from coast to inland. The areas closest to the ocean — particularly the ridgelines above the Sonoma Coast and the extreme sites of Fort Ross-Seaview — produce Pinot Noir and Chardonnay of haunting delicacy, shaped by wind, fog, and growing seasons that extend well into October. Further inland and south, sites in the Petaluma Gap are defined by wind-driven cooling that preserves acidity while allowing full physiological ripeness. The producers working the Sonoma Coast include some of California's most committed small estates — RAEN, Littorai, Hirsch, Flowers, Peay — and the wines they make are among the most compelling arguments for California's capacity to produce genuinely world-class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
