Windsor
Windsor is the in-between town — ten minutes north of Santa Rosa, ten minutes south of Healdsburg, surrounded by vineyards and edged by the Russian River. For decades a quieter agricultural community, Windsor has been steadily emerging as a wine country destination in its own right, with a renewed Town Green that hosts summer concerts and a growing inventory of restaurants and tasting rooms. The Russian River Valley wineries are immediately to the west; the Alexander Valley is a short drive north.
Hotels in Windsor remain mostly in the practical-comfort tier — the Windsor Inn, a few well-kept chain properties, and a vacation rental inventory that's grown alongside the town. Guests who choose Windsor are typically wine-country regulars who've discovered they can stay for less, drive less, and reach more wineries than they would from Healdsburg or Santa Rosa. It's a value-aware base for the seasoned traveler.
