How the Guide Works

How do I plan a trip with the map?

Explore the map, tap the places that catch your eye, and add them to your route. Build each day around where you're staying, then cluster nearby tastings, tables, and things to do around it. The map keeps your day geographically honest, so you're not crisscrossing the county.

How do I find a place?

Home carries one search box, and it leads into our entire editorial coverage: a search engine built to find the best tables, stays, tastings and more in Sonoma. Search by name, or by what you're after: a winery, a hotel, a town, an amenity, even the airport you land at. Your result drops its pin on the map and opens its Compact Card, ready to add to your route. The same search sits behind the magnifying glass on every map page.

What does the guide cover?

Seven industries: Wineries, Restaurants, Hotels and Rental Properties, Wine Walks, Events, Adventures and Transportation. Each has its own map, where its entire editorial coverage appears as industry pins. Tap a pin and its card opens on the rail next to the map, one tap from its editorial. On Wineries, the pins come up by AVA: tap an appellation and its tasting rooms appear. All of it is built to simplify your Sonoma trip.

Want to travel by city?

We've got you covered. Each town has its own page, with its own map and everything we cover there, industry by industry.

What is a Compact Card?

The Compact Card, our mini, is where you meet every business in the guide. Search for a place or tap its pin, and its Compact Card lands at the top of the rail beside the map: + adds it to your route, × sets it aside, and tapping the card opens its Blue Book. Once a business's Anchor Article is published, its Compact Card also opens beside its pin on the map and leads straight to the full page.

What is the Blue Book?

The Blue Book is our complete coverage. Every business in the guide has a Blue Book card: who it is, what it offers and, where they apply, the amenity icons that help you plan. It opens over the map from the Compact Card on your rail, so you never lose your place.

What is an Anchor Article?

The Anchor Article is the full page: the place, the people, the story and the gallery. Anchor Articles are published a round at a time, industry by industry. Until a business's Anchor Article is published, you meet it through its Compact Card and its Blue Book.

How do I build and keep an itinerary?

Everything happens on the rail beside the map: that is where you add stops to your route and build your itinerary, and your route follows you from page to page. Once your stops are added, the icons on the mini rail take over. Put your route in geographic order, or wander further and tell the map how many miles you are willing to travel from your last stop. When you are done, print your itinerary, or send it to friends: they open it on your route, add their own choices of where to go in Sonoma, and send it back to you.

Can I set dates and party size?

Yes. Add your dates and how many are in your group, and they travel with your itinerary when you print it or send it.

What is LocaleLoop?

LocaleLoop is our route builder. On every map page you search, tap places onto your route, and the route draws itself on the map, stop by stop. It also opens ready-made routes: our downtown wine walks and the routes built around events arrive on the map as samples, and you add all of a route or only the stops you want. To build your own wine walk or your own event route, tap Add to my list on any card in our editorial pages. Your list waits for you on the map, where you add the places you decide on and finalize your route.

Want to see a neighbor's route?

Open Suggested Routes. We've built sample routes from the things we do in Sonoma, built for you by neighbors. Sample one on the map, add it as it is, or combine it with your own choices: your stops keep their place, and the sample's stops join after them.

Can I get directions?

Yes, without ever leaving the site. Open the directions on the mini rail and your route is written out leg by leg, each leg opening to its turn by turn steps. Start at your first stop or from your own location, and the directions print with your itinerary.

Why isn't a place I love on here?

LocaleTerroir is curated, not comprehensive. Every listing is chosen on editorial merit, and restaurants are chosen by neighbors, the people who live and work in Sonoma County. It is never pay to play: a place appears because it earned a spot, not because it bought one.

Do you cover Napa?

No. LocaleTerroir is Sonoma County only. It's a deliberate focus, so everything the guide sends you to is genuinely Sonoma.

Where do tasting rooms appear: where they pour, or where their grapes grow?

Where they pour. A winery is placed by the physical location of its tasting room within its Sonoma AVA, so the map matches your actual day, not the vineyard's paperwork.

Why do some images look like samples?

Our editorial is real and current: every write-up is a place we actually cover. Until a business sends us its own photographs, its cards carry our Locally Selected label, and the people on its full page appear as our burgundy drawings.
