Owner Bob Miller's Salmon Creek anchor — surf lessons, kayak rentals and tours, SUP, e-bikes, full coastal gear.

Visit WebsiteThe beginner surf lesson with instructor Nate — wetsuit fitting at the shop, ride to a gentler-break beach, technique on shore, then in the water for the first wave. The most accessible introduction to California surfing on the Sonoma Coast.
Bodega Bay Surf Shack is the heart of the Salmon Creek surf scene and the coastal water-sports anchor on Highway 1 — owner Bob Miller (locally known as Uncle Bob) has run the shop for over twenty years, and the depth of his local water knowledge is the editorial differentiator no chain rental shop could match. The shop's offerings span surf lessons (lead instructor Nate runs beginner-friendly sessions especially well-suited to kids and first-timers), kayak rentals and guided tours of Bodega Harbor and the bay, stand-up paddleboard rentals, e-bike rentals, and a retail counter stocked with serious surf and beach gear including specialty Carver surfkates.
What sets the Surf Shack apart is the community-hub culture: Uncle Bob and the staff treat every customer to local recommendations — which way the surf is breaking on a given morning, which beach to launch the kayak, which trail to ride the e-bike on. The Salmon Creek surf break is one of California's most iconic beach breaks, with powerful conditions resembling San Francisco's Ocean Beach, and the Surf Shack is the closest gear-and-instruction provider to that break. Beginner surf lessons happen at smaller, gentler beaches with Nate teaching technique before pushing into Salmon Creek. The shop also serves as the kayak launch authority for the bay, with maps and route suggestions to wildlife-rich corners. Family-owned, locally rooted, and the most personal water-sports operation on the Sonoma Coast.

Owner
Bob Miller — "Uncle Bob" — has surfed the Sonoma Coast for decades and runs the Bodega Bay Surf Shack with an infectiously "stoked" warmth. A patient teacher and longtime community fixture, he points beginners to Doran Beach and stronger surfers up to Salmon Creek.
