Surf lessons (beginner-friendly with instructor Nate) · Kayak rentals (single and tandem) · Guided kayak tours of Bodega Harbor · SUP rentals · E-bike rentals

Signature Adventure

The beginner surf lesson with instructor Nate — wetsuit fitting at the shop, ride to a gentler-break beach, technique on shore, then in the water for the first wave. The most accessible introduction to California surfing on the Sonoma Coast.

Bodega Bay Surf Shack is the heart of the Salmon Creek surf scene and the coastal water-sports anchor on Highway 1 — owner Bob Miller (locally known as Uncle Bob) has run the shop for over twenty years, and the depth of his local water knowledge is the editorial differentiator no chain rental shop could match. The shop's offerings span surf lessons (lead instructor Nate runs beginner-friendly sessions especially well-suited to kids and first-timers), kayak rentals and guided tours of Bodega Harbor and the bay, stand-up paddleboard rentals, e-bike rentals, and a retail counter stocked with serious surf and beach gear including specialty Carver surfkates.

Experience Highlights

Beginner Surf Lesson with Nate — wetsuit fitting at the shop, a ride to a gentler-break beach, shore technique, then your first wave.

Salmon Creek Break — the closest gear-and-instruction provider to one of California's most iconic beach breaks.

Guided Kayak Tours — single and tandem trips through Bodega Harbor and the bay.

SUP & E-Bike Rentals — paddleboards and e-bikes with local route maps.

Uncle Bob's Local Knowledge — twenty-plus years of where the surf's breaking and which beach to launch.

What sets the Surf Shack apart is the community-hub culture: Uncle Bob and the staff treat every customer to local recommendations — which way the surf is breaking on a given morning, which beach to launch the kayak, which trail to ride the e-bike on. The Salmon Creek surf break is one of California's most iconic beach breaks, with powerful conditions resembling San Francisco's Ocean Beach, and the Surf Shack is the closest gear-and-instruction provider to that break. Beginner surf lessons happen at smaller, gentler beaches with Nate teaching technique before pushing into Salmon Creek. The shop also serves as the kayak launch authority for the bay, with maps and route suggestions to wildlife-rich corners. Family-owned, locally rooted, and the most personal water-sports operation on the Sonoma Coast.

Owner

Bob Miller — "Uncle Bob" — has surfed the Sonoma Coast for decades and runs the Bodega Bay Surf Shack with an infectiously "stoked" warmth. A patient teacher and longtime community fixture, he points beginners to Doran Beach and stronger surfers up to Salmon Creek.

Experience Details

Wetsuit fitting is part of every surf lesson — the shop's wetsuits are noted for being well-maintained and close to new condition. Bring a swimsuit, towel, change of clothes, sunscreen for face and lips. Surf lessons: bring booties if you have them, otherwise rentals are available. Kayak/SUP: layers for variable coastal weather.

Provided

Surfboards (longboards, shortboards, and Carver surfkates available), wetsuits, surf lesson instruction with Nate, kayaks (single and tandem), guided kayak tour leadership, paddleboards, e-bikes, helmets, booties available for rent, route maps and local recommendations.

Price Includes

Surf lessons run with boards, wetsuits, booties, and Nate's instruction included. Kayak, SUP, and e-bike rentals come with the gear they need — helmets, paddles, life vests — plus route maps and the shop's local advice on where the surf and the water are best that day.

Price Excludes

Gratuity for instructors is separate. Multi-day or extended rentals are priced beyond the base session.

Not Recommended For

Not ideal for non-swimmers (water-based activities require swimming ability), travelers in winter unwilling to wear wetsuits in cold Pacific water, or guests wanting high-volume mass tourism experiences (the Surf Shack is intentionally small-scale).
