The Astro is a restored 1963 mid-century motor lodge in Santa Rosa's SOFA arts district — design-forward, locally rooted, and the editorial counterpoint to the city's chain inventory. Acquired by the team behind The Spinster Sisters restaurant, with on-site bicycle rentals, an art gallery program, fire pit courtyard, and a curated mid-century interior.

The Astro is the single most distinctive lodging in Santa Rosa — a 1963 mid-century motor lodge in the SOFA (South A Street) arts district, fully restored and reimagined as a design-forward 34-room hotel. The original neon roadside sign was preserved. The renovated interiors lean into the era with terrazzo, period lighting fixtures, original mid-century modernist furnishings, and a deliberately curated palette that feels intentional rather than nostalgic. The property was acquired by the team behind The Spinster Sisters — the celebrated farm-to-table restaurant a short walk away — with the goal of further developing this overlooked corner of Santa Rosa filled with makers and artists.

Specialty Offerings

The 34 guest rooms include two kitchenette suites and feature Casper mattresses, high-thread-count linens, and Sonoma County-made furnishings, snacks, and toiletries. A lush edible garden courtyard with fruit trees and a fire pit anchors the property, alongside an on-site art gallery program and an indoor lounge. Bicycle rentals and repair are available for guests heading downtown or out to the western wineries. For travelers who want their Sonoma County hotel to be design-led rather than resort-tier — and to be in Santa Rosa proper rather than out in the vineyards — The Astro is the obvious editorial pick. Press has been consistent: Vogue, GQ, Goop, Travel + Leisure, Condé Nast Traveler, and the New York Times have all profiled the property since its 2017 reopening.

Owner

Liza Hinman is co-owner and president of Spinster Hospitality, the team behind The Astro and the adjacent Spinster Sisters restaurant in Santa Rosa's SOFA arts district. A James Beard Foundation Women's Entrepreneurial Leadership Program alum, she led the 2017 transformation of a derelict 1963 motor lodge into the design-forward, bicycle-friendly motel that helped anchor the neighborhood's renaissance.

Eric Anderson co-owns The Astro through Spinster Hospitality. When the 2017 wildfires hit days before the property's planned opening, it was Anderson who reached out to the City of Santa Rosa for an emergency occupancy permit, turning the unfinished motel into a free shelter for evacuees — a gesture that's still part of the property's local identity today.
