The Madrona stands apart from the Tuscan and Provençal pretensions that define so much of California wine country lodging. Built in 1881 in Aesthetic Movement style and reimagined in 2022 by co-owner and designer Jay Jeffers, the property occupies eight acres on the west side of Healdsburg, just across Dry Creek from town. Interiors are intensely creative — period antiques mixed with contemporary art, modern interventions, and curiosities collected over a lifetime of travel. The hotel has been recognized with two Michelin Keys in both 2024 and 2025.

Rooms and suites span the original mansion, the restored carriage house, and a handful of standalone bungalows scattered through the gardens. The on-site Madrona restaurant is supplied in part by the property's own half-acre regenerative garden and orchard, with bar program ingredients foraged from the grounds. A pool surrounded by flower-filled gardens, a picnic lawn, and a citrus grove guests can wander invite slow stays. The concierge program is widely considered one of the strongest in Sonoma.

Jay Jeffers is a celebrated San Francisco–based interior designer who, with his brother Kyle and a circle of investors, took on the 1881 Madrona mansion in 2021 and reimagined it as a hotel that doubles as a personal portfolio. Every room carries his sensibility — bold color, layered art, an unapologetic embrace of pattern — making the property unmistakable in a town where most hotels chase neutral.

Tim Harmon is the founder and CEO of Mill Valley–based Palisades Hospitality Group, which operates The Madrona alongside The Elene (opening in Napa), El Dorado Hotel in Sonoma, North Block in Yountville, and Olema House on the coast. His portfolio of more than 35 hotels and restaurants brings consistent operational discipline to The Madrona while preserving the 1881 mansion's architectural identity and Jay Jeffers' design sensibility.
