A big, group-friendly barbecue room on Third Street that borrows from Texas, Memphis and the Carolinas. Wine Focus

Downtown Barbecue opened in November 2024 on Third Street in the heart of Santa Rosa, taking over the large space left by the Townes restaurant, and set out to give the city center a dedicated barbecue room. After a brief closure in the fall of 2025, it reopened in November 2025 under new leadership, keeping its casual, generous approach to smoked meats. Still a young restaurant, it is building its following one platter at a time. The room is big and roomy, made for groups, with a bar, a happy hour from 3 to 6 p.m. and a pace that suits both a quick lunch and a long dinner with friends. It sits a few blocks from Courthouse Square.

Menu Highlights
Brisket
Texas style, salt and pepper, crispy crust
Pulled Pork
Carolina style pork shoulder, pickled vegetables
Smash Burger
ground brisket, grilled onion, campfire sauce
Briscuit
buttermilk biscuit, sliced brisket, smoked strawberry jam
Brisket and Peppers Sando
brisket, melted onion and peppers, horseradish mayo
Pork Belly Biscuit
buttermilk biscuit, smoked pork belly, apricot jam

The smoker sets the menu. Beyond the headline meats come competition-style Memphis ribs, a house hot link and smoked Cajun chicken, plus Memphis wings at lunch. Groups should look at the Pitmaster Platter, which feeds four with pickles, sides and bread, and still leave room for a round of burnt ends chili. The sides are made to hold their own, with twice-baked potatoes, tallow fries and mac and cheese among them. The style borrows from Texas, Memphis and the Carolinas rather than pledging itself to one tradition. Come early for a beer and a few plates at the bar, or at dinner with friends, and order generously to share, since the platters are built for passing around the table.
