Hanging plants, soft light and a long bar set the mood at this restaurant and cocktail bar in The Barlow. The kitchen leans on mushrooms, house ferments and garden produce: the umami bomb of shiitake cream, broccoli and sticky rice, a kimchi pancake, fry bread. Garden-to-glass cocktails share the bar with spirit-free elixirs; dogs are welcome on the patio.

Fern Bar sits inside The Barlow in Sebastopol, where a plant-forward kitchen shares the room with an ambitious cocktail program. The space is verdant and intentional in its design (hanging plants, soft lighting, a long bar that anchors the dining room), and the format is a true hybrid of restaurant and cocktail bar, with neither half overshadowing the other. It opened in 2018, and chef Joe Zobel leads the kitchen. The Bohemian and The Press Democrat have both honored its bar and its cocktails in their annual readers' awards, year after year from 2020 through 2022. Its reputation has grown by word of mouth rather than national press, and much of its following is local.

Joe Zobel co-founded Fern Bar in Sebastopol's The Barlow, which opened in 2018, and leads its plant-forward kitchen. He pairs vegetable-forward small plates with the bar's garden-to-glass cocktails, and his Umami Bomb of shiitake cream, fried broccoli, sticky rice and nutritional yeast has become the room's meatless standard bearer.

Sam Levy is an operating partner at Fern Bar in Sebastopol's Barlow district, where he built the garden-to-glass cocktail program poured alongside chef Joe Zobel's menu. He previously managed the bar at The Restaurant at Meadowood in St. Helena, and at Fern Bar he gives spirit-free drinks the same care as the cocktails.
