Sondra Bernstein opened The Girl & The Fig in Glen Ellen in 1997, and in 2000 she moved it to the Sonoma Plaza, into the ground floor of the historic Sonoma Hotel on West Spain Street. The move put her country French cooking at the center of the town's dining life, where it has remained ever since. John Toulze, who left Viansa Winery to help open the original restaurant and cooked there for decades, took over the restaurant's operations when Bernstein stepped back from daily management in 2021, giving the room a rare continuity of hands. Bernstein's 2004 cookbook carried the restaurant's style well beyond Sonoma. Inside, the dining room is warm and unfussy; outside, a garden patio and a sidewalk parklet put guests in the open air in season. In 2022 the restaurant marked twenty-five years.

The menu follows the country French table through the seasons, and figs turn up across it whenever the trees allow. The wine list is built around Rhône varietals, a position Bernstein sums up as All Rhône, All The Time, and the bar adds French aperitifs to the hour before dinner. On a cool evening, a table inside and a second glass make a good case for lingering. The restaurant is open daily, from 11:30 a.m. on weekdays and from 10 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday, when the late-morning crowd brings a lively mix of visitors and residents to the Plaza. Reservations are wise on weekends and during harvest, when the square fills with people in town for the wineries. For a quick visit, a seat at the bar with an aperitif and a small plate captures the spirit of the place without the commitment of a full dinner.
