Chef-owner Liza Hinman has run The Spinster Sisters in Santa Rosa's SOFA arts district since 2012, changing the menu every week. Small plates such as smoked trout dip and kimchi-bacon deviled eggs go around the table before larger dishes like trout almandine or Mary's chicken with orzo. Natural, small-production wines favor women winemakers.

Wine Focus
Natural wine focus; emphasis on small producers; wine bar program led by Giovanni Cerrone.

The Spinster Sisters opened in August 2012 on the corner of South A Street in Santa Rosa's SOFA arts district, the restaurant of chef Liza Hinman, formerly of Santi in Geyserville. Hinman trained under Loretta Keller, Craig Stoll, Franco Dunn and Dino Bugica, and her cooking reads as Sonoma County cuisine: seasonal local ingredients in dishes drawn from her East Coast roots and a long gravitation toward Italy. The menu rotates weekly, which keeps regulars coming back to see what has changed. It is a neighborhood restaurant in an arts district many visitors never think to explore, and on most evenings many of the guests seem to know each other. It is well worth the short detour from downtown.

Menu Highlights
Carrot Hummus
olive oil, seasonal accents
Smoked Trout Dip
King salmon caviar, bagel chips
Kimchi-Bacon Deviled Eggs
house ferment, soft-yolked
Milk-Braised Pork Shoulder
Sonoma Valley grown, slow-cooked
Stinging Nettle Pasta
house-foraged, hand-cut noodles
Meyer Lemon Mousse
shortbread cookies, signature dessert

Plan to share. The menu is built around small plates passed family-style, followed by a few larger dishes such as trout almandine or Mary's chicken with orzo, and it changes every week with the season. Italian technique runs through the cooking, applied to whatever local farms are bringing in. The wine program favors natural, organic and small-production bottles, with a particular focus on women winemakers, and the long bar is a comfortable seat for a solo dinner. When the weather is good, the outdoor tables on the corner are the ones to ask for. Dinner is served Wednesday through Saturday from 5 to 9 and on Sunday until 8:30, and the restaurant is closed Monday and Tuesday. Reserve through the restaurant's website, and leave time for a walk through the arts district before or after.
