California's biodynamic pioneer — an 85-acre Sonoma Mountain ranch run as a self-sustaining ecosystem since the 1990s. Sheep graze between vines, ponds host beneficial insects, a half-acre insectary feeds the program. The Biodynamic Tractor Tram Tour winds through the estate and cave to a seated tasting with local cheese.

Benziger is one of California's most important wineries — not just for the wine, but for what they changed. When the family converted their Sonoma Mountain estate to biodynamic farming in the 1990s, it was a radical act. Today the 85-acre estate operates as a self-sustaining ecosystem, with insectaries, cover crops, and farm animals all contributing to vine health without synthetic inputs. The winery produces everything from accessible everyday bottles to the serious Parasol Biodynamic Estate series. The estate tram tour is one of the most educational wine country experiences in Sonoma County.

Tribute, Sonoma Mountain — The flagship biodynamic estate Bordeaux blend; Benziger's first certified-biodynamic wine, structured and age-worthy.

Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon — A polished, dark-fruited Cabernet from sustainably farmed sites.

de Coelo Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley — A refined, cool-climate estate Pinot Noir.

Paradiso de Maria Sauvignon Blanc, Sonoma Mountain — A crisp, estate-grown biodynamic white.

Chardonnay, Sonoma County — A bright, balanced Chardonnay rounding out the range, alongside estate Merlot, Zinfandel and Syrah.

Founded in 1980–81 by Mike Benziger and family on an 85-acre Sonoma Mountain estate, Benziger is a Demeter-certified biodynamic pioneer (certified 2000), known for the flagship Tribute. The estate, with its tram tour and wildlife corridors, has been owned by The Wine Group since 2015.

The Benziger family bought the 85-acre Sonoma Mountain ranch in 1980 and produced their first wines in 1981 — the second act of a Brooklyn-to-Sonoma story that began when the family outgrew their beverage distribution business in New York. Under Mike Benziger's viticultural leadership, the estate converted to certified Biodynamic farming, and the property is now an ecosystem: sheep grazing between vines, ponds of beneficial insects, cover crops, a half-acre insectary, and a commitment to biodiversity that's become a reference point for California. The award-winning Biodynamic Tractor Tram Tour (Best Winery Tour, USA Today 10Best) winds through the estate and the wine cave, ending with a seated tasting of winery-exclusive Biodynamic wines paired with local cheese. Family- and dog-friendly, with picnic terrace, olive oil program, and casual flights in the tasting room. One of California's most important Biodynamic statements.

Winemaker

Director of Winemaking at Benziger since founder Mike Benziger's retirement. Amaroli arrived at Benziger in 1999 — three years after entering the wine industry — having graduated from Sonoma State University with a degree in Biology and Chemistry in 1996. She had lived and worked in Europe before college, where she absorbed the food-and-wine lifestyle that became her professional path. She started her wine career in the vineyards, then moved into the lab and operations before joining Benziger. Her work continues the Benziger family's 30+ year commitment to biodynamic farming — the estate's 85-acre Sonoma Mountain property is a Demeter-certified biodynamic ecosystem with sheep, cows, polyculture, ponds, and 29 unique microclimates inside a natural amphitheater carved into the mountain's volcanic side. She has overseen flagship Tribute, the first Demeter-certified Biodynamic wine released from the Sonoma Mountain Estate, and the broader Benziger portfolio, which carries third-party sustainable, organic, or biodynamic certification across every bottling.

Vintner

Chris Benziger is the gregarious family face of Benziger Family Winery, the Biodynamic estate his family established on Sonoma Mountain in Glen Ellen. He joined the winery in 1993 after earning a marketing degree from the University of San Francisco, and today stewards the home ranch — shepherding the estate's flock of sheep, tending its gardens and fruit trees, and making the Biodynamic preparations that feed the vineyards. A natural storyteller, he is a familiar presence guiding guests through the estate's celebrated tram tours and tastings, embodying the family's belief that farming is the soul of the wine.
