Hanna Winery has been farming estate vineyards in Alexander Valley and the Russian River Valley since 1985, building a reliable mid-sized program that covers both the warm Cabernet country of the valley floor and the cooler Pinot and Chardonnay sites on the coast. The Alexander Valley Cabernet and Sauvignon Blanc are the most consistent expressions in the portfolio, priced accessibly and made with care. A good introductory reference for the appellation at fair prices.

Russian River Valley Sauvignon Blanc — The renowned flagship; a crisp, vibrant white and multiple Sweepstakes winner.

Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon — A polished, estate-grown Cabernet from the sunny valley.

Russian River Valley Pinot Noir — A cool-climate red of bright red fruit.

Bismark Mountain Zinfandel, Moon Mountain District — An inky, concentrated red from the rugged Mayacamas estate.

Russian River Valley Chardonnay — A fresh, balanced white from the cool valley.

Dr. Elias Hanna founded the winery in 1985, and his daughter Christine has run it for decades — building a portfolio that reaches across some of the best addresses in Sonoma. The Alexander Valley tasting room sits on a hillside ten minutes from Healdsburg, with a long covered veranda that looks out across the estate rows toward the Mayacamas. The default flight is five wines drawn from the family's vineyards in the Russian River, Alexander Valley, Dry Creek, and the Bismark Vineyard up in the Moon Mountain District — an unusually complete cross-section of northern Sonoma. A seated cheese pairing is available for those who want to linger. Picnic tables under the old oak welcome guests who have brought their own.

Winemaker

Jeff Hinchliffe has been winemaker at Hanna Winery since 1998, marking more than 25 years with the family-owned estate founded by Dr. Elias Hanna and now led by his daughter Christine Hanna. San Francisco–born and trained in brewing science at UC Davis, Hinchliffe came from Mendocino's Hidden Cellars and the Gabrielli winery he co-founded before reshaping Hanna's Sauvignon Blanc with night-picking, native yeast, and a move away from oak. He works across Hanna's long-held vineyards — cool Russian River Valley, sunny Alexander Valley, rugged Moon Mountain, and the Bradford Mountain home ranch in Dry Creek — with a sustainability focus and a curiosity that extends to rare varieties like the nearly lost St. Macaire.

Christine Hanna
President

Christine Hanna is president of her family’s winery and the force behind its modern rise. Her father, Dr. Elias Hanna — a world-renowned cardiac surgeon — founded Hanna in 1985, seeking a return to the farming life of his upbringing. Christine grew up making small batches of wine with him and took over management in the early 1990s, growing the winery from about a thousand cases to more than fifty thousand. She repositioned Hanna around Russian River Valley Sauvignon Blanc — now more than half its production — and built an estate-vineyard program across Sonoma County. She is also the author of a winemaker’s cookbook.
