Chris and Piper Underwood's 36-acre Westside Road estate, bought in 2025, is named for Reuben Harper, who farmed hops here in the 1850s. Winemaker Vance Rose makes Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the estate and the Moon Dust vineyard in the Sebastopol Hills. Open daily in summer; reservations encouraged, walk-ins welcome.

Harper's Rest takes its name from Reuben Harper, who farmed this land on Westside Road in the 1850s, when hops were the area's major crop. He died in 1857 and his family buried him on the property, where his barely legible tombstone still stands beneath a California bay laurel, now surrounded by vines. The estate, mostly wooded, lies in the Middle Reach of the Russian River Valley, a few hundred yards west of the river. The Underwood family, in the wine and spirits business since 1888, bought it in 2025 to join the Moon Dust Vineyard they had acquired in 2021. It is the family's first estate winery, and its fifth generation now carries on Harper's stewardship of the land.
Russian River Valley Chardonnay: the debut 2023 shows toasted, salted-almond notes on an easy-drinking frame (Wine Spectator, 90 points).
Moon Dust Vineyard Chardonnay, Russian River Valley: from four acres first planted in 1996 in the cool Sebastopol Hills; the 2023 brings more intensity and power (Wine Spectator, 92 points).
Russian River Valley Pinot Noir: the appellation Pinot Noir, released with the Chardonnay in the 2023 debut vintage.
Moon Dust Vineyard Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley: from eleven acres planted in 2007 to six clones on Goldridge soil, the "moon dust" that names the vineyard.
The estate vineyard, planted in 2006, covers just over eight acres: 7.2 acres of Pinot Noir in fourteen clones and 0.9 acre of Chardonnay. Both vineyards are farmed on regenerative organic principles with vineyard manager Matt Stornetta of Stornetta Made, using cover crops, compost and rotational grazing, with no synthetic fertilizers, pesticides or fungicides. Moon Dust is Regenerative Organic Certified, and the estate vineyard is on track to follow. In the cellar nothing is added beyond what the grapes bring: no commercial yeasts, enzymes or fermentation aids. Chardonnay ferments in open-top vessels, and the wines age 14 months in French oak, resting on their lees without racking. The Estate Expressions tasting pours four estate wines against a backdrop of rolling vineyards, mountains and Mount Saint Helena; leashed dogs are welcome in the outdoor tasting areas, and the property is permitted for weddings and private events.

Vance Rose is winemaker and general manager of Harper's Rest, overseeing both estate vineyards and the cellar. His career spans retail, wholesale, winemaking and marketing, and he has run several wineries. He works alongside consulting winemaker Matt Courtney, who made wine from this Westside Road vineyard for twelve years after eight years as assistant winemaker at Marcassin under Helen Turley and John Wetlaufer, and who also makes his own label, Ferren. Together they follow a vineyard-first approach with minimal intervention in the cellar.

Chris Underwood belongs to the fifth generation of a family in the wine and spirits business since 1888, when Young's Market began as a Los Angeles grocery chain before moving into wine and spirits distribution after Prohibition. His grandfather Vernon O. Underwood joined the company, followed by his father and his brother Jeff; Chris started in the warehouse and rose to CEO of Young's Holdings, parent of Wilson Daniels and Infinium Spirits. Before wine he played on USC's 1990 NCAA men's volleyball championship team, and his grandfather owned Buena Vista Winery for several years from the 1960s. With his wife Piper he now makes the family's first estate wines at Harper's Rest.
