Where three appellations meet, southern Alexander Valley brushing Chalk Hill and Knights Valley, the vineyard is planted entirely to the five classic Bordeaux reds plus Sauvignon Blanc, across 24 blocks. Eugene Silva designed the winery in 2001; over 9,000 square feet of caves are dug into the hill. Reservations only.

Lancaster Estate is one of Alexander Valley's most serious and least-known luxury producers — a hillside estate in the Mayacamas range producing Cabernet Sauvignon and a red blend of exceptional concentration and structure. The wines are sold primarily by allocation and through the estate's on-site wine country guest house, adding a hospitality dimension that matches the quality of the portfolio. High scores, limited production, and a commitment to the estate as a complete experience rather than just a brand.

Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Alexander Valley — The flagship; a blend of five red Bordeaux varieties from volcanic hillside vineyards.

Nicole's Proprietary Red — The top bottling, built from the best barrels of the finest estate blocks.

Sophia's Hillside Cuvée — A refined, structured hillside red blend.

Samantha's Sauvignon Blanc — The estate's crisp white Bordeaux variety.

Lancaster is an estate-grown Bordeaux-variety producer at the southern tip of Alexander Valley, with hillside vineyards and underground aging caves.

The property sits where three appellations meet — southern Alexander Valley brushing against Chalk Hill and Knights Valley — and the vineyard is planted entirely to the five classic red Bordeaux varieties plus Sauvignon Blanc, across 24 distinct blocks. Everything is estate-grown, estate-produced, and estate-bottled. The winery itself, designed in 2001 by architect Eugene Silva to blend into the landscape, opens into more than 9,000 square feet of caves dug directly into the hill. The Estate Tasting runs on the patio or in the cave tasting room; the Hillside Cave Tour takes guests deeper into the working cellar, barrels flanking the walk, for five reserve reds from older vintages. Reservations are required and the pace is deliberately private — no drop-in foot traffic, no bar crowd.

Winemaker

David Drake is the winemaker at Lancaster Estate, the 53-acre family-owned property in the southern Alexander Valley — at the confluence of Chalk Hill and Knights Valley — now part of Bill and Carol Foley's portfolio. Drake joined as an intern in 2000 and worked his way up through cellar master and assistant winemaker, honing his craft alongside winemakers such as David Ramey before taking the lead role he has now held for more than two decades. He specializes in estate-grown Bordeaux varieties — Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot — vinified block by block from the estate's volcanic hillside soils, guided by a philosophy of balance in which no single element overtakes the wine.

Ted Simpkins
Founder

Ted Simpkins founded Lancaster Estate in Alexander Valley, building it into one of Sonoma County’s most prominent Cabernet Sauvignon estates. A longtime executive at Young’s Market — one of the nation’s largest beverage distributors — Simpkins focused the hillside property almost entirely on Cabernet and Bordeaux varieties, and famously named each vineyard block after a family member, even pets. He also founded the sister Roth Estate label, naming it for his mother, Rose Roth. In 2012 he sold Lancaster and Roth to Bill Foley’s Foley Family Wines — reportedly proposing the deal over a round of golf — while staying on as a partner.
