Founded in 1988 by four friends: winemaker James Hall, Anne Moses, and Donald and Heather Patz. They've built relationships with California's best growers: Hyde, Hudson, Pisoni, Martinelli, Gap's Crown. The Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are the focus; the 2022 Sonoma Coast Chardonnay reached #22 on Wine Spectator's 2025 Top 100.

Patz & Hall was founded in 1988 by four friends with a singular focus: to craft Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the very best small, family-owned vineyards in California. Winemaker James Hall, along with Anne Moses, Donald Patz, and Heather Patz, built the project on long-term partnerships with vineyards that would over time become reference points for California cool-climate winemaking — Larry Hyde's Hyde Vineyard, Lee Hudson's Hudson, the Martinelli family's vineyards, Pisoni, and Gap's Crown among them. The winery itself, designed by James Hall, is a purpose-built facility just outside downtown Sonoma that allows the team full control of fermentation, élevage, and bottling — a level of investment in process that's rare for a winery so committed to vineyard-driven, single-site bottlings.
Hyde Vineyard Chardonnay, Carneros — A flagship single-vineyard Chardonnay from a partnership with grower Larry Hyde dating to 1990.
Dutton Ranch Chardonnay, Russian River Valley — Cool-climate fruit from the storied Dutton family vineyards.
Gap's Crown Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast — Structured and deep, from the iconic Petaluma Gap site.
Sonoma Coast Chardonnay — A multi-vineyard blend named a Wine Spectator Top 100 Wine in 2024 and 2025.
Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir — The benchmark house Pinot, each lot fermented separately and kept 100% free-run.
The Sonoma House at Patz & Hall — the longtime tasting room with expansive vineyard views toward the Mayacamas Mountains — is in transition. As of late 2025, the team announced a move to a new bungalow tasting room just off Sonoma Plaza, scheduled to open in spring 2026. Through the transition, members and guests are being welcomed to the working winery on 8th Street East for in-depth tastings and an inside look at production. The portfolio remains anchored by single-vineyard Sonoma Coast and Russian River Valley Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, with the 2022 Sonoma Coast Chardonnay earning the #22 spot on Wine Spectator's Top 100 of 2025. Visits are by reservation only; check the website for current location and hours during the transition.

James Hall has guided Patz & Hall since its first vintage in 1988. The son of an English professor and wine lover, he developed an early palate on family travels through Europe, studied liberal arts at UC Santa Cruz, then transferred to UC Davis for a degree in fermentation science. He spent the 1980s as assistant winemaker at Napa's Flora Springs — where he befriended sales manager Donald Patz — and as winemaker at Honig before he, Donald and Heather Patz, and Anne Moses founded Patz & Hall as a single-vineyard Chardonnay and Pinot Noir house. Over more than three decades he built relationships with legendary growers such as Larry Hyde, Lee Hudson, and the Chenoweth and Martinelli families. Hall sold the winery to Ste. Michelle in 2016 but stayed on making the wines; he handed daily winemaking to James McCeney in 2024 as Winemaker Emeritus, and that same year led a group of investors to buy the winery back.

Anne Moses is one of the four friends who launched Patz & Hall in 1988 over a bottle of Krug, each chipping in $5,000 to make 300 cases of Chardonnay. A Los Angeles native, she first drove the wines into the Southern California market before becoming the winery’s president, partnering with her husband, winemaker James Hall, and with Donald and Heather Patz. Together they built one of California’s most acclaimed single-vineyard Chardonnay and Pinot Noir houses, sourcing from elite growers like Hyde and Dutton — a winery, as Anne tells it, founded on the love of two couples and the land.
