Ram's Gate sits at the southern threshold of Sonoma — the first winery travelers reach driving north from San Francisco, perched above 28 acres of organically farmed estate vines with the Carneros lowlands rolling out toward San Pablo Bay. Founded in 2011 by Jeff O'Neill and now guided by winemaker Joe Nielsen, the winery draws fruit from its own estate together with some of the region's most coveted sources: Durell, Gap's Crown, Hyde, Hudson, Sangiacomo. The focus is Chardonnay and Pinot Noir made with transparency and restraint. The hospitality, handled from a striking timber-and-stone tasting hall overlooking the vineyard, is deliberate and unhurried — a pairing philosophy applied to every visit.

Estate Pinot Noir, Carneros — The flagship from the 28-acre organically farmed estate vineyard.

Gap's Crown Vineyard Pinot Noir, Petaluma Gap — A structured, acclaimed single-vineyard Pinot.

Hyde Vineyard Syrah, Carneros — A taut, savory cool-climate Syrah from the famed Hyde Vineyard (94 points).

Hyde Vineyard Chardonnay, Carneros — A vibrant, stony single-vineyard white.

Estate Sauvignon Blanc, Carneros — A crisp, bright white from the home vineyard.

The estate is certified organic through CCOF, and the 28-acre home vineyard sits at the southern tip of the Carneros AVA — one of the coolest winegrowing pockets in California, shaped by fog and wind off the bay. Visits are by appointment only, Thursday through Monday. The core experience is a seated flight of three wines drawn from the Appellation and Single Vineyard collections, with the option to add cheese and charcuterie from the in-house culinary team or step up to a full pairing crafted in conversation with a sommelier. The architecture — rough timber, iron, walls of glass — frames the vineyard rather than competing with it. Guests settle in on the patio with the wind, the sheep in the far pasture, and a view that explains why O'Neill chose this particular ridge.

Joe Nielsen
General Manager & Director of Winemaking

Joe Nielsen leads Ram's Gate Winery as General Manager and Director of Winemaking, having joined the Carneros estate in 2018 and taken on GM responsibilities in 2021. Raised in Lansing, Michigan, he discovered winemaking through a program at Michigan State before honing his craft over nearly a decade at Donelan Family Wines, rising from cellar master to head winemaker. At Ram's Gate he has reshaped the program around holistic, precision farming — cutting estate water use by roughly a third and steering the vineyards toward organic certification — and was named one of Wine Spectator's 'Stars of California Chardonnay' for his fresh, mineral-driven Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Syrah.

Anthony Viloria
Senior Director of Luxury Estates

A Sonoma native, Anthony Viloria leads hospitality at Ram's Gate as Senior Director of Luxury Estates for owner O'Neill Vintners & Distillers, overseeing the guest experience, culinary programming, and day-to-day operations of the Carneros estate. Raised in a food-focused family and shaped by Sonoma's dining scene, he built his career across the region's hospitality world — including leading the acclaimed Stark Reality Restaurants group and, earlier, building the wine program at Santa Rosa's Willi's Wine Bar. He brings a people-first, deeply local sensibility to one of the gateway estates of Sonoma wine country.
