Named for the Pacific Electric Railway that once crossed Southern California, Red Car was founded in 1998. Cool-climate Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah come from six vineyards in Occidental, Sebastopol, Freestone, and Cazadero, ten miles from the Pacific. An early West Sonoma Coast AVA force; tasting lounge under redwoods.

Red Car Wine takes its name from the Pacific Electric Railway — the iconic interurban rail system that once connected Southern California. Founded in 1998, the winery produces Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah from estate and selected vineyard sites on the extreme Sonoma Coast using a low-intervention approach inspired by old Burgundian traditions. Cool-climate coastal sites shape wines of natural acidity and savory depth. One of the West Sonoma Coast's most thoughtful producers.
Estate Pinot Noir, Fort Ross-Seaview — From the Estate Vineyard planted in 2005 high on the far Sonoma Coast; vibrant, savory and built on whole-cluster, native-yeast winemaking.
Heaven & Earth Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast — A single-vineyard bottling of energy and depth from a prized coastal site.
Sonoma Coast Syrah — A cool-climate, coastal Syrah with black pepper, leather and dark plum; a marriage of clones in a Northern Rhône–inspired style.
Estate Chardonnay, Fort Ross-Seaview — Taut and transparent, with little new oak and extended lees aging.
Rosé of Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast — The winery's cult-following rosé, bright and bone-dry.
Red Car is a small Sebastopol-based farming and winemaking operation rooted in cool-climate West Sonoma Coast sites within ten miles of the Pacific. Since planting its Fort Ross-Seaview Estate Vineyard in 2005, it has made site-specific, balanced, moderate-alcohol Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah.
The Sebastopol tasting room and lounge on Graton Road is the center of the Red Car visitor experience — a spacious, laid-back space framed by giant redwoods where guests taste through cool-climate Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah sourced from six ridgetop vineyards in Occidental, Sebastopol, Freestone, and Cazadero. The winery's estate vineyard sits in Fort Ross-Seaview at the extreme western edge of the appellation, where Pacific fog and sandstone soils produce wines of genuine tension. Winemaker Tanner Scheer works with native yeasts, gravity flow, and minimal intervention — the signature is perfumed aromatics, crisp texture, and uplifting acidity. Coastal Reserve tastings run $25 per person; a Wine Lounge Experience with charcuterie is available for larger groups. Walk-ins welcome but reservations recommended.

Tanner Scheer has been the winemaker at Red Car Wine since 2015, crafting cool-climate Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah from the rugged far reaches of the West Sonoma Coast. Founded in 2000 and now owned by Richard and Alison Crowell, Red Car planted its estate vineyard high in the Fort Ross-Seaview AVA in 2005 and farms six sites all within ten miles of the Pacific, where coastal fog and long, cool seasons yield bright, balanced, lower-alcohol wines. Scheer — who arrived in California at eighteen to work harvest and came up through Ampelos and Liquid Farm — is a committed minimalist, letting each windswept site speak through the glass from the Sebastopol tasting room.

Richard Crowell is the owner and a founding partner of Red Car, which he launched in 2000 with Mark Estrin and Carroll Kemp — making fifty cases of Syrah in a Culver City garage and naming the venture for the trolleys that once crossed Los Angeles. After Estrin’s passing in 2005 and Kemp’s departure in 2017, Richard and his wife Alison became the sole owners. He now guides Red Car’s focus on cool-climate Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah from its Fort Ross-Seaview estate, where the oldest Syrah is honored as the Estrin Block.
