Roth Estate

Roth Estate was established in 2001, initially a simple tribute to the founders' family name and a desire to produce bold, powerful Cabernet Sauvignon expressive of the Alexander Valley. The Bordeaux focus was set early. In 2012, Bill Foley, founder of Foley Family Wines and proprietor of Chalk Hill Estate across the road, acquired Roth and integrated it into the Foley Food & Wine Society portfolio. Cool-climate varieties were added to the program: Pinot Noir from a Foley family property on Trenton Road in the Russian River Valley, Sauvignon Blanc from estate fruit, and Chardonnay from Sonoma Coast vineyards. The expansion broadened the style without diluting the brand's foundation; Roth still leans on Bordeaux varieties grown across Alexander Valley and Sonoma County.

The Chalk Hill Road tasting estate is unusually generous for a single-property Foley winery: an expansive terrace for outdoor seated tastings, an interior tasting room, and an 8,500-square-foot brick-lined wine cave finished with nearly 30,000 hand-laid bricks and Moooi chandeliers, a project completed in 2015. A herd of resident bison grazes on the hill behind the cave and is visible from the patio. The standard cave tasting is paired with cheese; the Ultimate BBQ Lunch experience features estate-grown sides and smoked short ribs. As a hub property in the Foley Food & Wine Society, Roth also showcases limited-production wines from sister estates including Lancaster Estate (Alexander Valley), Foley Johnson (Rutherford), and Sebastiani (Sonoma). The tasting room opens Friday through Sunday by reservation; the offices keep weekday hours.
