Winery Events

Seghesio is a Healdsburg landmark and one of Sonoma County's longest-running wineries. Edoardo Seghesio, an Italian immigrant from Piedmont, planted his first Zinfandel vines in 1895 in what would become the family's Home Ranch in Alexander Valley, and in 1949 the family bought the Grove Street winery in Healdsburg at auction. Crimson Wine Group has owned Seghesio since 2011, and the family is still part of the story: Ned Neumiller, a fifth-generation Seghesio, is Viticulture Director. The winery formally adopted sustainable farming in 2003, counts as old vines only those at least 50 years old, and still makes Zinfandel its headline variety.

Sonoma County Old Vine Zinfandel: the flagship, blended from old-vine sites (averaging around 75 years) on the Dry Creek bench and cooler Alexander Valley; bold, balanced and food-friendly.

Rockpile Zinfandel: a single-appellation Zin from the high-elevation Rockpile AVA, concentrated and structured.

Home Ranch Barbera, Alexander Valley: a 100% Barbera from the estate's founding 1895 ranch, vibrant with wild berries and dried herbs.

Sangiovese, Alexander Valley: drawn from the family's heirloom clone; Seghesio's Chianti Station block is the oldest Sangiovese planting in North America.

Pinot Grigio: a crisp Italian-style white reflecting the family's heritage; Marian's Reserve (Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Carignane) anchors the reserve reds.

Founded in 1895 by Italian immigrant Edoardo Seghesio, the family has become synonymous with Sonoma Zinfandel and Italian varietals, farming more than 300 sustainable acres across Alexander, Russian River and Dry Creek Valleys, including the original 1895 Home Ranch Zinfandel blocks.

The Healdsburg tasting room is one of the more relaxed and welcoming in Sonoma. The Grove, a shaded outdoor lounge area, is open daily on a first-come, first-served basis: bring a picnic blanket, order wine by the glass or bottle, and stay as long as you like. A 30-minute Bar Flight ($20) takes walk-ins; the Classico ($30) pours Zinfandels alongside the Italian heritage varieties that distinguish Seghesio from valley peers, and Italian Roots ($45) goes deeper into Vermentino, Barbera, and Sangiovese; all three complimentary for wine club members. The Behind-the-Scenes Tour and Tasting ($60, $48 for club members, 90 minutes) is the fullest visit, a stroll through the crush pad followed by a private tasting of premier estate wines. Bocce courts run alongside the Grove, and a court can be reserved ($50 for up to six, complimentary for club members). Children, leashed pets, and picnics are all welcome, a rare combination in Sonoma's modern tasting room landscape. On the Healdsburg wine walk it is worth the short walk from the Plaza for the Zinfandel alone.

Andy Robinson
Winemaker

Andy Robinson is the winemaker at Seghesio Family Vineyards, at the helm of the cellar after more than fifteen years working alongside fourth-generation winemaker Ted Seghesio. Established in 1895 when Italian immigrant Edoardo Seghesio planted his first Zinfandel in what is now the Home Ranch in Alexander Valley, Seghesio has spent more than 130 years and five family generations becoming one of Sonoma's definitive Zinfandel and Italian-varietal houses. Trained at Charles Krug and shaped by consultants Phil Freese and Alberto Antonini, Robinson crafts the winery's celebrated old-vine Zinfandel and Sangiovese, plus Barbera, Vermentino, Arneis, and Aglianico, poured just off the Healdsburg plaza.

Edoardo & Angela Seghesio
Founders

Edoardo and Angela Seghesio founded this winery in 1895, and their name has been synonymous with Zinfandel ever since. Edoardo left his family’s vineyards in Piedmont, Italy, in 1886, worked his way up at the Italian-Swiss Colony, and married Angela Vasconi, the manager’s niece. Together they bought 56 acres in northern Alexander Valley and planted the Home Ranch Zinfandel still farmed today, adding North America’s oldest Sangiovese in 1910. Edoardo tended the vines while Angela ran the business and household; after his death, she kept the winery going, shipping wine by the railroad that crossed their land.
