Stone Edge Farm has roots that go deep into California wine history. Founder Mac McQuown was a 1970 investor in the Chalone Wine Group and its Carmenet project on Moon Mountain. In 2004, McQuown launched his own venture nearby, partnering with friend and former Mayacamas winemaker Jeff Baker on a small estate dedicated to first-growth Bordeaux-style wines from mountain fruit. The Silver Cloud estate sits high on Moon Mountain, just down the road from the original Carmenet vineyards, with 18 acres of certified organic vineyards alongside olive groves and orchards. A complementary 4.5-acre estate on the Sonoma Valley floor anchors the program from below.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma Valley — The signature wine, structured for extended aging, from the Silver Cloud Estate high on Moon Mountain.

Surround Red Bordeaux Blend — A more approachable, earlier-drinking blend of the estate's Bordeaux varieties.

Sauvignon Blanc — Crafted in a classic Bordeaux blanc style, with Sémillon.

Stone Edge Farm makes only these three estate-grown wines each year, from its home vineyard near Sonoma Square and the organically farmed Silver Cloud Estate in the Moon Mountain District.

Today Stone Edge Farm operates as an integrated estate of wine, food, and agriculture. Phil Coturri — Sonoma's most respected organic viticulturist, who farms over 700 organic acres across Napa and Sonoma and helped designate the Moon Mountain District AVA in 2013 — oversees the vineyards. Alejandro Zimman is the winemaker, succeeding Jeff Baker; the wines have earned Wine Enthusiast scores up to 97 points for the Mount Pisgah and Silver Cloud single-vineyard Cabernets. The hospitality program is uncommonly serious: a culinary program led by John McReynolds (whose 2014 cookbook won the IACP's top prize), the two-Michelin-starred restaurant Enclos in downtown Sonoma led by Chef Brian Limoges, and now a new Stone Edge Farm La Maison tasting lounge. Visits to the Silver Cloud estate are by reservation only — typically a guided tour of the mountain vineyards, olive groves, and culinary gardens followed by a seated tasting of Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, and small-production Bordeaux blends.

Alejandro Zimman
Winemaker

Alejandro Zimman is the winemaker at Stone Edge Farm Estate Vineyards & Winery, taking the cellar helm with the 2018 vintage when founding winemaker Jeff Baker retired. Born in Argentina and raised in Madrid, he earned a chemistry degree and then a PhD in viticulture and enology from UC Davis, spending a decade in medical research before turning fully to wine — six years in Napa with the Michael Mondavi Family Estate and a harvest in New Zealand — ahead of joining Stone Edge. He carries forward founder Mac McQuown's vision of First-Growth-inspired, age-worthy Cabernet, farming the estate's mountain sites including Silver Cloud on Moon Mountain with a deliberately minimalist hand: grow the best fruit on the best terroir, and stay out of the way.

John “Mac” McQuown
Founder

Stone Edge Farm is the creation of John “Mac” McQuown, a financial pioneer who helped build the first index fund before turning to wine. An early force behind the Chalone and Carmenet wineries, he and his wife, Leslie, bought their Sonoma property in the 1990s and founded Stone Edge Farm in 2004 with longtime friend and winemaking associate Jeff Baker, chasing First-Growth Bordeaux quality from organically farmed Moon Mountain and valley-floor vineyards. A relentless environmentalist and entrepreneur, Mac died in 2024 at 90; Leslie, son Morgan, and Morgan’s wife, Alexa, now lead the family winery.
