Roger and Carmen Stuhlmuller bought the 150-acre property in 1982 and built a reputation as growers, supplying Chateau Souverain, Simi, and benchmark producers. Son Fritz launched the estate label in 1996, converting the red barn into a small cellar. It sits where Alexander Valley, Dry Creek, and Russian River meet.

Stuhlmuller Vineyards is one of Alexander Valley's finest small family estates — 130 acres farmed since 1994, producing Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay of exceptional site character. The estate sits on well-drained benchland soils with excellent north-south orientation, and the wines reflect the warm, structured character of prime Alexander Valley terroir without excess ripeness or oak. The Cabernet in particular shows what Alexander Valley can produce when restraint is valued over power.
Estate Chardonnay, Alexander Valley — The signature; native-yeast, sur-lie white of wet-stone minerality and lemon curd, prized for its value.
Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Alexander Valley — A structured, well-priced Cabernet from benchland and hillside blocks.
Estate Zinfandel, Alexander Valley — A small-allotment estate red.
A family-owned grower-producer farming 150 acres in Alexander Valley since 1996, Stuhlmuller also grows estate Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot in small blocks.
Roger and Carmen Stuhlmuller bought the 150-acre property in 1982 and quickly built a reputation as growers first, supplying Chateau Souverain, Simi, and other benchmark producers with fruit from the southwestern edge of the valley. Their son Fritz — now the proprietor — launched the estate wine label in 1996, converting the historic red barn on the property into a small artisan cellar designed for vineyard-specific lots. The vineyard sits on a rare geological seam where Alexander Valley, Dry Creek, and Russian River meet — gravel, clay, and volcanic soils carved by alluvial movement along the river. The tasting experience is intentionally slow and rural: pull up at the red barn, sit at the bar or on the patio, taste through the Chardonnay, Cabernet, and Zinfandel. Dogs are welcome, picnics are welcome, and a separate Yappy Hour runs Wednesday through Friday afternoons. Reservations help, but are not required.

Zac Childers has been winemaker at Stuhlmuller Vineyards since 2019, leading the cellar at the Stuhlmuller family's Alexander Valley estate — growers of acclaimed fruit since 1982 for the likes of Silver Oak and Aperture before Fritz Stuhlmuller launched the family label in the mid-1990s. A Virginia native, Childers came to California in 2009 and joined Stuhlmuller as a harvest intern in 2011, then worked vintages in Australia and New Zealand — including Torbreck's celebrated Run Rig — before completing his viticulture and enology degree and returning as assistant winemaker, rising to winemaker in 2019. He favors a terroir-driven, balanced style across the estate's sustainably farmed Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and small-lot Zinfandel.

Fritz Stuhlmuller turned his family’s Alexander Valley grape ranch into an estate winery. His parents, Roger and Carmen, developed the 150-acre property — on land whose roots trace to Cyrus Alexander himself — and the family built a reputation as growers of world-class fruit, supplying Silver Oak, Simi, and Aperture, among others. Inspired by the quality of wines made from his vineyard, Fritz launched the Stuhlmuller label in the mid-1990s and, by 2000, converted the historic barn into a small winery for estate Chardonnay and Cabernet. As proprietor and grower, he keeps the operation vineyard-driven, working hand-in-hand with the winemaking team.
