Ty Caton is a native Sonoman who farms old-vine Zinfandel and volcanic hillside Cabernet on Moon Mountain, making wine with a directness and honesty that reflects someone deeply rooted in the place. His Tytanium blend is one of the most sought-after wines on the mountain. Caton is both owner and winemaker, giving the wines an uncommonly consistent vision. Ty Caton is one of the few exclusively estate producers in the Moon Mountain District, farming 40 acres of steep hillside vines within a 108-acre property, the rest preserved as wild habitat. The estate produces the Caton Cabernet Collection: seven single-block Cabernet Sauvignons from distinct micro-sites within the vineyard, each shaped by its own soil depth, sun exposure, elevation, and clone. The volcanic bedrock is often just 12 to 18 inches below topsoil. Beyond Cabernet, the estate also grows Merlot, Syrah, Petite Sirah, and Malbec. The Kenwood tasting room is comfortable and unpretentious (classic tasting flight or a reserve Cabernet Sauvignon flight). Private barrel tastings available at the Sonoma Urban Winery by appointment (daily at 11 AM, 1 PM, and 3 PM).
