On the north side of the Plaza since 1931, the Sonoma Cheese Factory now pours from The Wine Shop at Sonoma Cheese Factory: hyper-local, small-production bottlings, many rarely sold outside Sonoma County, with the Sonoma share growing every season. Choose a bottle and the knowledgeable staff will match it with world-class cheese and charcuterie from the counter, or house-smoked meats from The Butcherman. The best tables in the house are on the sidewalk, European-café style, facing the Plaza green.

2 W Spain St

A Plaza landmark since 1931, when Italian immigrant Celso Viviani founded it as the Sonoma Valley Creamery, birthplace of Sonoma Jack and the first pepper jack made in California. The historic building stands on the former site of Mariano Vallejo's Casa Grande, and its cheese counter has anchored downtown Sonoma for generations.
Today it's a full marketplace: award-winning cheeses and a sample counter, a deli, house-smoked meats from The Butcherman, and local goods, plus The Wine Shop at Sonoma Cheese Factory, pouring hyper-local, small-production bottlings with staff who know how to pair them with the counter. Take a sidewalk table facing the Plaza green, or make it the stop for the day's picnic: a bottle, a board, and everything to go, for a winery lawn or the Plaza itself. Open seven days a week.

Owner, Anidel Hospitality
Chris Fanini founded Anidel Hospitality, which brought the Sonoma Cheese Factory into its care in 2024 and restores historic properties across Northern California. A San Francisco tech entrepreneur, he co-founded the website builder Weebly and served as its chief technical officer.

Managing Director, Anidel Hospitality
John Wittig is managing director of Anidel Hospitality, overseeing the Sonoma Cheese Factory, Sonoma's Best and the group's other historic properties. He says Anidel takes on the historic buildings most investors avoid, and wants an active role in the towns where it works.
