The little sibling of Oakland's James Beard-nominated natural wine bar, The Punchdown opened at Sebastopol's Barlow in May 2023. A mom-and-pop shop run by D.C. Looney and Lisa Costa, it champions "more than organic" farming and minimal-intervention winemaking — if grandma wouldn't recognize the additive, it doesn't go in the bottle.

Tasting Highlights

Natural-Wine Flights — a James Beard-nominated, globe-spanning list of organic, biodynamic, minimal-intervention bottles by the taste, glass, or bottle, paired with tinned-fish conservas.

Inside is one of Wine Country's largest natural-wine selections — hundreds of organic, biodynamic, minimal-intervention bottles from Sonoma (more than 100 county labels alone), France, Italy, Georgia, and beyond, with a dedicated shelf under $25. Sip flights like the Orange Adventure or Super Natty Mix by the glass, paired with charcuterie, spiced carrot dip, Red Bird bread, and dozens of kinds of tinned fish.

D.C. Looney

Co-Owner

Co-owner and the crackling, evangelical heart of The Punchdown, D.C. holds a master's in wine marketing from the Paris-based OIV program — earned while traveling 32 countries to study wine. He met Lisa Costa as a harvest intern at Williams Selyem in 2007.

Lisa Costa

Co-Owner & Sommelier

Co-owner and a certified sommelier, Lisa launched the original Oakland Punchdown with D.C. in 2010 — a 2022 James Beard semifinalist — before bringing the natural-wine shop north to Sebastopol. The two met as harvest interns at Williams Selyem in 2007.
