Casa Sonoma is a modern home a few minutes from the historic Sonoma Plaza, and the Plaza is reason enough to stay this close. General Mariano Vallejo laid it out in 1835 when he founded the town, and it remains the largest plaza in California. The Bear Flag Revolt broke out here in 1846, and the district became a National Historic Landmark in 1960. At its center stands City Hall, dedicated in 1908 and built with four identical sides so that no merchant on any side of the square would be favored. Around it today are tasting rooms, restaurants and boutique shops, all an easy few minutes from the house. The home itself pairs contemporary architecture with a polished but welcoming feel, made for a small group that wants comfort close to town.

The living room has plush seating and a sleek fireplace, and a large dining area opens to a fully equipped kitchen. Three bedrooms with three and a half baths sleep seven. The primary suite has a standalone soaking tub, the queen room has its own bath and patio access, and the third room has a twin-over-full bunk. The backyard is made for California evenings: a private pool and hot tub, a firepit, outdoor dining, an expansive lawn with a swing, and a serious station for grilling, smoking and prep. Sebastopol, the Bohemian Highway and Bodega Bay make fine day trips farther west.
