Coplan Vineyards Villa

Coplan Vineyards is the Carneros estate of the Coplan family, who grew and sold their grapes for a decade before bottling wine under their own name. The family calls the place Coplandia. It sits on the Sonoma side of Los Carneros, east of the town of Sonoma, beneath the Mayacamas and within three miles of San Pablo Bay. The property covers ten acres, a little less than half of them planted to vines. The oldest Cabernet Sauvignon there dates to the 1940s, joined by new plantings in 2019, and winemaker Jacqueline Yoakum now makes the wines. A stay here is a stay inside a working family vineyard rather than beside one.

The villa is a modern farmhouse with vaulted ceilings, a two-way fireplace and a primary suite that opens onto its own balcony. The floors are reclaimed Presidio eucalyptus, and the dining tables were milled from 1920s cedar out of the Cal Berkeley stadium. The kitchen centers on a Cambria waterfall island, with a table that seats ten. Outside, days drift between the 50-foot heated pool and spa, the bocce court, the pergola and the fire pit, among more than a hundred olive trees and raised organic beds, with Orangey the barn cat keeping watch. A heated outdoor shower finishes an afternoon in the sun. Gloria Ferrer and Gundlach Bundschu are close by, and Sonoma Plaza is under four miles away.
