forty acres on the ridge

Olive & Oak spreads across forty acres of oak-studded hillside high on Trinity Road, above the village of Glen Ellen, where the Mayacamas foothills roll down toward the Valley of the Moon. It is one of the newest homes in AvantStay's Sonoma collection, and it makes the most of its ridge: views run across the ridgelines in every direction. The name comes straight from the land, with oaks on the slopes and rows of olive trees and silvery olive bushes around the house. Glen Ellen is a seven-minute drive down the hill, a small village of tasting rooms and restaurants where Jack London once kept his Beauty Ranch, now a state historic park. Up here, the hillside belongs to the house and its guests.

Inside, walls of glass open an open-concept kitchen and living room to that view, and every bedroom has its own desk and chair, handy for anyone who needs an hour of work before the pool. Outside is where the days go. The 75-foot saltwater pool has a swim lane for real laps, with a pergola-shaded lounge and an outdoor dining table beside it. A hot tub, a sauna and an outdoor shower make an easy circuit, and a full outdoor kitchen, with its own grill and refrigerator, keeps dinner on the terrace. A half bath off the pool deck spares trips indoors. Evenings end outside as the light leaves the ridgelines, with Glen Ellen's restaurants close enough for a night out.
