Syrah is a contemporary bungalow on a quiet hilltop above the town of Sonoma, about ten minutes by car from Sonoma Plaza. The setting is rural and private, with deer for neighbors and views across the valley, yet the town's history is close at hand: the Mission San Francisco Solano and the Sonoma State Historic Park are each under ten minutes away, and Buena Vista Winery is just beyond. Ram's Gate, at the southern gateway to the valley in Carneros, makes an easy trip for an afternoon tasting. The house is California casual in spirit, with an open floor plan, plush furnishings, and large windows and French doors that fill the rooms with light. AvantStay manages the home.

Three bedrooms have king beds, the primary with its own bath, and the fourth holds a bunk and a twin, so the house sleeps up to ten with floor mattresses on request. Out back, a roomy deck with loungers faces an infinity pool with valley views, the place where afternoons drift by and a glass of wine meets the sunset. Pool heat can be added for a fee from April through October, with 48 hours' notice. There is a barbecue and a fireplace, along with a washer and dryer and air conditioning. The access road is one lane and winding, so take it slowly. Pets are not allowed, and there is no outdoor burning or smoking anywhere on the property because of wildfire risk.
