The house shares its name with the old nickname for Sonoma Valley. General Mariano Vallejo recorded "Valley of the Moon" in an 1850 report to the California Legislature, and Jack London, who ranched nearby, made it famous with his novel of the same name. The home sits on 1.5 private acres in a quiet valley at the Santa Rosa end of that stretch, right beside Kenwood, a village laid out on the old Rancho Los Guilicos land grant when the railroad arrived in 1887 and renamed Kenwood around 1895. Today Kenwood is a town of tasting rooms, and several are within walking distance, among them St. Francis, Ledson, Chateau St. Jean and VJB. Sugarloaf Ridge, Hood Mountain and Trione-Annadel parks are each about five minutes away by car or bike.
