Barrel Tasting

Every March, when the vines are still bare and the tourist crowds haven't yet returned, Northern Sonoma County throws open its cellar doors for Barrel Tasting Weekend. The Wine Road collective launched it back in 1978 as a way to coax visitors into the valleys during the quiet weeks of early spring, and it has since become one of the longest-running events of its kind in California. Across Alexander Valley, Dry Creek Valley, and Russian River Valley, dozens of wineries invite guests down among the cold tanks and wine-stained casks to taste wine still asleep in the barrel — the same ritual, generation after generation.

Barrel Tasting is the rare event where you taste the future. Drawn straight from the barrel with a wine thief, the pours are works in progress — and you can buy them as “futures,” paying now for bottles that arrive 12 to 18 months later, often at a discount and sometimes in quantities too small to reach a store shelf. Many wineries round out the visit with current releases and older library bottles, so a single day spans a wine's whole life. Pack a picnic, line up a designated driver, and go for the cellar access itself: the person handing you a taste is frequently the winemaker.
