Sonoma Valley Vintage Festival

One of California's oldest wine festivals — 129 years and counting — built around the historic Sonoma Plaza: a Blessing of the Grapes, a grape stomp, and a Grand Tasting in the old Sonoma Barracks that gathers fifty-plus valley producers under one roof. It's small-town pageantry that predates the whole modern wine-country idea, anchored by Sonoma Valley stalwarts like Anaba and Kenwood Vineyards, with a harvest dinner out at Viansa. Proceeds support the valley's vintners-and-growers foundation.

The Plaza itself is free to roam — parade, music, food stalls, and family activities spill across the square over a September weekend. The marquee pieces are ticketed and sell separately: the Grand Tasting in the Sonoma Barracks, the grape stomp (bring clothes you don't mind staining purple), and the harvest dinner. Buy stomp and tasting tickets ahead, and plan for crowds — parking tightens around the Plaza, so arrive early or walk in from town.

What sets this apart from wine country's polished tasting circuit is how genuinely old-fashioned it feels: costumed revelers, a horse-drawn wagon parade circling the Plaza, and live music under the plane trees, all on the same green where settlers raised the Bear Flag and declared California's independence. It's less a marketing event than a town tradition the valley has kept alive across three centuries — a working-community harvest party that happens to sit on the ground where California winemaking began.

Sonoma Valley Vintners & Growers Alliance

The nonprofit alliance of Sonoma Valley's wineries and grape growers, which produces the festival and channels proceeds through its foundation back into the valley's viticultural community.
